Roger Dubuis once again demonstrates its fearless approach to haute horlogerie with the unveiling of the Excalibur The Kabuto Legacy, an exceptional limited-edition timepiece that celebrates one of the most defining moments in Japanese history. Inspired by the unification of Japan during the 17th century, this remarkable creation transforms historical symbolism into an extraordinary expression of contemporary watchmaking and artistic craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from the birth of a unified Japan, Roger Dubuis revisits the period when the country’s most influential samurai commanders gathered under the leadership of Tokugawa Ieyasu, laying the foundations for more than two centuries of peace and prosperity. This pivotal historical chapter serves as the creative soul of the Excalibur The Kabuto Legacy. At its centre stands Edo Castle, symbolically represented as the heart of a newly unified nation, while the twelve legendary samurai commanders surrounding it embody loyalty, courage, wisdom and unwavering determination. Rather than simply illustrating history, Roger Dubuis interprets it through the language of contemporary haute horlogerie, transforming centuries-old symbolism into an exceptional wrist-worn work of art.

Twelve Kabuto, Twelve Legendary Warriors

The dial presents an extraordinary composition featuring twelve meticulously hand-engraved Kabuto helmets, each crafted in 18K pink gold using refined Métiers d’Art techniques. Every miniature sculpture faithfully recreates the distinctive ceremonial helmet of one of Japan’s renowned bushō, complete with its unique ornaments and symbolic identity. Each Kabuto requires between two and three days of meticulous craftsmanship, with the intricate frontal ornaments representing some of the most technically demanding details to execute. Beginning at 12 o’clock with Tokugawa Ieyasu, the visionary architect of Japan’s unification, the circular display continues with the celebrated Four Heavenly Kings of Tokugawa and seven additional legendary samurai commanders, each represented through their historically accurate Kabuto and accompanied by their respective Kamon, or family crest, engraved on the caseback.

Edo Castle Reimagined Through Contemporary Artistry

At the heart of the dial rises an abstract architectural interpretation of Edo Castle, conceived through Roger Dubuis’ unmistakably contemporary aesthetic. Its striking deep-blue finish recalls traditional indigo dye historically associated with samurai garments before becoming an enduring symbol of Japanese artistic expression. Multiple decorative techniques including polishing, bright polishing, circular brushing and shot-blasting bring remarkable depth and architectural dimension to the miniature fortress. Composed of 17 individual elements, the dial becomes an intricate landscape where traditional symbolism and avant-garde design exist in perfect harmony.

The RD821 Calibre: Precision Beneath Artistic Expression

Powering the Excalibur The Kabuto Legacy is Roger Dubuis’ in-house RD821 automatic calibre, a movement that perfectly balances technical excellence with artistic freedom. Certified by the prestigious Poinçon de Genève, the calibre incorporates 172 components, 33 jewels, beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and delivers a 48-hour power reserve. Every movement receives 14 distinct hand-applied finishing techniques, creating an exceptional interplay between polished and satin-finished surfaces that has become a hallmark of Geneva’s finest watchmaking traditions. The architecture of the movement provides the visual space necessary for the elaborate artistic display while preserving the technical standards expected from one of Geneva’s most daring Manufactures.

Exceptional Details From Every Angle

The 45 mm case is crafted from 18K pink gold and features a sapphire crystal ring beneath the bezel, complemented by a blue enamel ring surrounding the crown. On the reverse, the twelve engraved Kamon of the featured samurai are delicately laser-engraved onto a blue-coated pink gold ring, framing the sapphire caseback and revealing the beautifully finished automatic rotor. Completing the timepiece is a distinctive blue calfskin leather strap designed with stitched segments inspired by traditional samurai armour. The watch is delivered with an additional interchangeable leather strap equipped with Roger Dubuis’ Quick Release System.

To ensure historical accuracy, Roger Dubuis collaborated with Professor Frederik Cryns, specialist in Japanese history and consultant on the Emmy Award-winning television series Shōgun. His expertise helped preserve the authenticity of the historical references while allowing the Maison to reinterpret them through the contemporary codes of
